Singam Suriya promotes road safety
Actor Suriya is well known for his philanthropic streak and for promoting social causes. It was this dedication that led Rotary Club of Madras East ( RCME) to unanimously choose him to help them in their road safety campaign.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign today, Rotarian Kandasamy Bharatan of Kavithalaya revealed, “ Suriya was the unanimous choice of RCME when we mooted the idea of making six short films to spread the message of traffic awareness and safety in association with the Traffic Police and the Automobile Association of Southern India ( AASI). Suriya was busy shooting for the mega project Singam, yet we received a spontaneous response from him and he said “it’s a cause I appreciate and I will do it”. He took an entire day off to shoot including dubbing time and did it absolutely free of cost.”
Since Suriya was away shooting in Mumbai, a message from him was read out. In his message Suriya said, “A very close friend of mine from college lost his life in a bike accident. The doctor said his life may have been saved had he worn a helmet. I was shattered to see his kid and family. Perhaps they wouldn’t have been in this situation if such a small precaution had not been overlooked.
Our lives are already hectic and most of us are racing to fulfil our professional and personal duties. The additional stress is added by long hours in heavy traffic on roads overflowing with pedestrians and vehicles all in a hurry to get to their destinations. But if we just pause for a few seconds and show consideration for our fellow road users, obey traffic rules which are for our own safety, avoid road rage, drunken driving, talking on mobiles, speeding and park our vehicles with consideration for others and wear helmets for safety, perhaps we could make Chennai a model city and a haven for road users. Let’s pledge to show our consideration for fellow Chennaites.”
The CD was launched by Shakeel Akter, Additional commissioner of police law and order who was the erstwhile traffic commissioner when the Rotary mooted the project last year. M Ravi the present additional commissioner Traffic was also present along with Rotarians Balaraman and WV Anand.
The six short films of 30 seconds each were shown to the CM last Friday and will be aired on TV and shown in theatres, schools and colleges apart from corporate institutions. Shakeel Akter revealed that 600 people in Chennai were killed in road accidents annually and 13000 in TN alone.
He stressed on the need for enforcement, engineering and education to improve the traffic situation. M Ravi added, “Enlisting the public’s co operation and emergency action for relief during the golden hour are also important. 80% of victims are in the 18 to 35 age category and I hope this endeavour by Rotary and Suriya will raise awareness for the cause.”

Anushka's glamorous avatar in Singam Movie
Be it a bikini or traditional wear, Anushka always sizzles. With her performance in Arundhati (where she practically carried the entire film on her shoulders), this talented actress proved she is not just a pretty face. In Billa, she proved she could look glam and yet mean business. After the success of Arundhati in Tamil (dubbed version), Kollywood has witnessed a meteoric rise in demand for Anushka Shetty’s flicks in Tamil.
And this time, in Singam, directed by Hari, she displays both avatars with glamorous costumes in the song sequences and a homely look in the rest of the film. Anushka's glamorous avatar in 'En Idhayam' and 'She Stole My Heart' has been sending heat waves across theatres.
According to sources close to the unit, “The Censor Board felt that though the oomph has been shown decently, it might upset audiences. So they suggested we mask two scenes in the songs. Had we not masked them, the film would have got an 'A' certificate. Now, the film is doing well in theatres with a U/A certificate.”

Movie Review: Singam
Movie : Singam
Production: Sun Pictures, Big Pictures and Studio Green Productions
Direction: Hari
Star-casts: Surya, Anushka, Prakash Raj, Vivek, Radha Ravi, Nizhalgal Ravi, Bose Venkat and many others
First things first, you guys must watch ‘Singam’, even if you aren’t an ardent buff of Surya or Hari. The reason is that it has got all the specified elements that define a top-class entertainment catering to the tastes of all cohorts.
A hunky cop bashing down roughnecks single-handed, tripping legs with his ladylove, finest challenges tackled between good and baddie is all what it makes ‘Singam’ – a stunning film.
The film centers on Durai Singam (Surya), a sincere cop, who joins the service for his father’s (Radha Ravi) request. It doesn’t mean a great job to him as he wants to be a part of his dad’s business, i.e. provision stores. But he keeps settling down each and every dispute in town by his good means as he perceives everyone to be his close relatives. Then comes cute, zippy girl Kavya (Anushka) for vacation in Nalloore and falls in love with Durai Singam for his specialties. But things take a different turn in the tale with the entry of deadly ruffian Mayil Vaaganam (Prakash Raj), who runs kidnap racketing. When, he’s out on a conditional bail to report everyday at Nalloore police station, he avoids by taking things for granted by sending his fellowmen. Honesty takes its possession, when Durai Singam orders Mayil to be at station within couple of hours or else threatens him to be barged behind bars.
Here starts the speculative situation as Singam is transferred on promotion to Chennai, but Mayil Vaaganam personally recommends him to be posted at Thiruvanmiyur Police Station patently for settling scores.
What follows next is a series of cat and mouse game that makes you move towards edge of seats.
Surya himself acts as the biggest brand to sell the film and on pars is Hari’s stunning screenplay. Not even a single moment you would feel so restless and annoyed just as it happened with some of the previous commercial films. Anushka has more to do with this film unlike her previous shows, in which she was precisely utilized for glamorous factors. Vivek’s comedy is quite okay, but not to the expected levels. Prakash Raj’s sleepwalking through the same baddie role doesn’t make us irksome rather electrifies the script.
You’ll keep counting what’s gonna happen next and further for every 5 minutes as you wouldn’t feel that 2.5 hours as already passed by end of show.
Devi Sri Prasad’s musical score is an added value while cinematography and editing adds more momentum to this racy screenplay.
On the whole, the producers can keep themselves ahead on cloud nine as the film is sure to cross 100 days with houseful shows across many centres.
Hats off to director Hari and we expect the sort of show with his upcoming films as well.
Verdict: A Must watch

Hari speaks about Singam Movie
Singam image Gallery
After Sevval, director Hari is back with Singam starring Suriya and Anushka in lead roles. Suriya's success spree is likely to continue with Hari-directed Singam. The duo is hoping for a hat trick after Aaru and Vel. Suriya dons the role of a police officer after Kaakha Kaakha and Hari directs this police story after Saamy.
So will Singam live up to public expectations? “Yes, it will be an adorable cop film. But Suriya’s role in this film will not be like cop roles in his other films. In fact, my biggest challenge was to ensure that his role does not remind one of his earlier cop characters,” Hari said to a leading English daily.
“Suriya’s performance is the highlight of this film. He performed all the stunts and did not opt for body doubles. Anushka plays a modern college girl who has traditional beliefs. Prakashraj plays the villain; I firmly believed that no one else could do this character as well as he could,” he revealed.
“We shot at several places including Tuticorin and it being a small town, people would gather the minute they knew Suriya was shooting. So, we had to shoot discreetly and swiftly. Moreover, we did not use sets. We had shot a sequence in a village near Tuticorin and we had to make it look like it had been shot in AP. The villagers allowed us to make all the changes we needed to their homes. We were really touched by their gesture,” he added.
So get ready for some action on May 28, 2010!

Summer movie releases
What summer is it?. It is big stars, mega budgets and huge hype to get the holiday season audiences into the theatres.
As Abirami Ramanathan says: “Summer is the best season to release the biggies, as one of the biggest attractions for the audiences are big budget entertainers.”The release of Lingusamy’s Paiya last Friday (April 2) has kickstarted the summer box-office. Next action adventure film on April 14 is Arun Vijay’s Maanja Velu, which the trade believes may turn out to be a masala entertainer that lure the B & C viewers to the theatres. Sundar C has two ‘masala’ entertainers releasing on the same day (April 16), Vaada and Guru Sishyan.
The big summer movie is definitely going to be Sun Pictures Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s 50th Golden Jubilee action adventure Sura, scheduled to release on April 23. Then on May 7, the cowboy adventure Irumbukottai Murattu Singam is scheduled to release.
The other big summer release is going to be Sun Pictures Suriya as ‘Dirty Harry’ cop in Singam, due May end or June first week.
It will be followed by the most eagerly awaited summer release Mani Ratnam’s Vikram-Aiswarya Rai Raavana on June 18. These are some of the films ready for release along with a dozen small and medium films.

Suriya plays a cop and sports thick goatee-moustache for Singam.
SUN TV recently procured the distribution rights of Singam, which is expected to be a summer release to cash in on the holiday season. Anushka plays Suriya’s female lead.

Anushka say height is one of her plus points
Anushka is literally a tall personality. She is one of the tallest actresses in south Indian cinema and she says her height is one of her plus points and a reason behind her making it big in Tamil and Telugu film industries.
“Many say height is a disadvantage for a heroine. Even there were rumours about my height factor that some heroes wear shoes with heels while acting with me. But there is no truth in it and I consider it as one my pluses,” she says.
On her forthcoming ‘Singam’, Anushka says, “I am thrilled by the working style of director Hari. He knows the knack of extracting work from colleagues. The film is a thorough entertainer and Hari has made a perfect balance between commercial and sensible cinema.”
Showering praises on Suriya, the lead actor of ‘Singam’, she says, “Dedication is the other name of Suriya. He is a complete professional who gives nothing but his best scene after scene. His performance was like that of a lion, aptly reflecting the title.”
Anushka has done glamour role in Singam
Anushka Shetty’s ‘Singham’ which features Tamil star Surya in lead is all set to roar in the month of April, 2010. ‘Singham’ is directed by Hari and has good ingredients like action, comedy, songs and punch lines, which will attract the mass as well as the class crowds.
Anushka Shetty’s presence will add the required glamour quotient to the movie. However, according to the unit sources, Anushka is said to sizzle in some songs in an ever glamorous way and her presence is just enough to declare the movie as a super hit of 2010.
The release of “Singham” is carefully planned in the last week of April, as the present ongoing exam season and IPL season are said to affect its run to a great extent, if it releases on April 16th, 2010.

Suriya's Singam movie special
Suriya is one actor who likes to experiment with different get-ups on screen. Whether in Kaakha Kaakha, Perazhagan, Pithamagan or Vaaranam Aayiram, the actor has done everything with ease and panache. Now he is busy wrapping up director Hari's Singam, after which he will report on the sets of RGV's much-hyped Raktha Chaitra.
Singam is special for many reasons:
>>Singam is Suriya's 25th film.
>>The actor is aiming for a hat-trick after the back-to-back successes of Ayan and Aadhavan.
>>The Hari-Suriya duo is also aiming for a hat-trick after the success of Aaru and Vel.
>>For the first time after Kaakha Kaakha, Suriya is playing the role of a police officer.
