Review: Adhey Naeram Adhey Idam

Tamil movies have mostly blamed the girls for failure in love affairs. Boy falling in love with a girl, girl reciprocating but finally abandoning him, getting married to a rich guy from abroad is what that is generally portrayed. This is done to make the movie more appealing to male audiences, especially youth. There will also be a sad song with lyrics blaming the lady for the downfall of a man and the song often gets the expected applause. So also, Adhey Naeram Adhey Idam is about the protagonist (Jai) getting betrayed by the girl (Vijayalakshmi) with whom he is in love. How different is the movie from the others with similar themes? Keep reading!
Who's In It?
After Vaamanan, Jai romances with Vijayalakshmi in Adhey Naeram Adhey Idam. Rahul, 'Lollu Sabha' Jeeva, Nizhalgal Ravi, Sreelekha and Ravi Prakash are part of the cast. Prabhu M. along with directing the movie has also written the story and the screenplay. Prem G. Amaran has composed the music.
What's It About?
Adhey Naeram Adhey Idam is about Karthik (Jai), Janani (Vijayalakshmi) and Siva (Rahul). Karthik meets Janani and falls head-over-heels in love with her. It's love at first sight and Janani also feels the same way about him. They both romance each other, spending time together at beaches, coffee shops, shopping malls, parks and restaurants. Karthik's dad (Nizhalgal Ravi) gets to know about Janani and strictly instructs him that he has to become responsible and find a job instead of chit-chatting with his friends all day long. He promises Karthik that he shall have them both married in a year and sends him to work in Australia. He advises Karthik and Janani not to stay in touch with each other so that his son is focused only on his career.
Karthik agrees and convinces Janani. He leaves for Australia with dreams to come back in an year and marry Janani. Meanwhile, Janani's father finds her a rich and an educated bridegroom - Siva (Rahul), one of the leading industrialists in town. Janani is confused and instead of talking about her love for Karthik and convincing her father, she accepts the proposal. When her friend tries to make her understand that she is betraying Karthik, she explains that her life would be much better if she marries the much more handsome, smarter and wealthier Siva.
Siva and Janani get married. She is happy with her married life until she meets Karthik when he comes back to Chennai. Karthik is shattered when he comes to know that he has been betrayed by Janani. He decides to extract his revenge. What happens after that forms the rest of the story leading to an unexpected climax.
The Performances
First of all, kudos to Jai and Vijayalakshmi for having chosen this movie which has a bold theme! The role of the leading lady is one that any actress would hesitate to accept. Vijayalakshmi, with just a few movies behind her, has plenty of scope to perform and she has done her best. Jai, as the irresponsible youngster stricken by the arrows of Cupid, is good. He brings in a few laughs along with 'Lollu Sabha' Jeeva. The chemistry between the lead pair works out well in the songs. Debutant Rahul as Siva is impressive. Jeeva is good in a few scenes, but he should try to bring in some originality to the characters he plays on the screen. There is already a Santhanam! Plagiarising his style might not help Jeeva to shine on the silver screen. Since the movie revolves around Jai, Vijayalakshmi and Rahul, except Jeeva, others have comparatively less screen presence. Performances by Nizhalgal Ravi and others are ok. More emotion in the actors' performance would have helped in the success of this story.
For Techie Lovers
Adhey Naeram Adhey Idam is technically average. The major plus of the movie? Songs by Prem G. Amaran. 'Adhu Oru Kaalam', 'Vennilavu' and 'Mudhal Murai' are above average. 'Toshiba' is ok. 'Namma Oru Chennaiyila' is already a big hit among the masses and is the pick of the lot. The screenplay is a bit slow. Prabhu M. has made a promising debut as a director with Adhey Naeram Adhey Idam.
Final Verdict
Adhey Naeram Adhey Idam, currently being thrashed by most critics, isn't that bad really, and is engaging at times. The movie could have been more entertaining with a better screenplay. Overall, it is watchable as a time pass.
